Proof American Gold Eagles were introduced by the United States Mint in 1986 along with the apr57 version. While the apr57 coins were introduced with all four weights in the first year, the proof series was rolled out over the course of three years. First came the 1 oz coin in 1986. The 1/2 oz coin was added in 1987. These 1/4 oz gold coins were introduced last, along with the 1/10 oz coin, in 1988.

On the obverse of 2020 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins is the effigy of Lady Liberty. This stunning design was developed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 for the US Mint to consider on four different gold coins and the US penny. It was eventually selected for the $20 Gold Double Eagle and featured on that coin until 1933.

The reverse field of the 2020 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle comes with an image of American bald eagles. Designed by Miley Busiek in 1986, this image is exclusive to the Gold Eagle coins and features a male eagle flying over the nest as a female watches over a hatchling within the nest.

All Proof American Gold Eagle coins are produced in the 21st century by the West Point Mint and come with a W mint mark on the obverse field of the coin within the rays of sunshine behind Liberty.
