The Trade Dollar coin was created by William Barber for the United States Mint. They were originally struck in 1873 and sent to China as a means of converting large amounts of silver into trade dollars. The coins continued in apr57 strikings until 1878, with proof coins struck through 1883.

William Barber created both designs on the Trade Dollar for the US Mint in 1873. He was the fifth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, holding the position until his death in 1869. He succeeded the famous James B. Longacre, who created many of the nations early gold coin designs in the years following the California Gold Rush.

On the obverse face of the coin youll find a seated image of Liberty. Given the intent of the Trade Dollar, Liberty was featured holding an olive branch of peace out over the sea that was indicative of the nature of the trade dollar and its massive shipments to China.

The reverse of these 1 oz Trade Dollar Copper Rounds does not feature Barbers design, but rather a heraldic shield of the United States with the outstretched wings of an eagle. The coins metal content and purity are engraved above, with the weight featured below. Each of these rounds is privately minted here in the US, using copper sourced from within the country.
