ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Karl Shapiro , a Jewish poet, who was known for his poems by a Jew. Karl used his personal experiences to be able to reflect and deliberate well written poems and essay. He was known for: Person, pLace and Thing, Place of Love, Essay on Rime, and the V letter and other poems. Many of his poems were printed by his wife because he wrote to her most of the time. The poem here is called "The Confirmation" from Person, Place and Thing. It expresses a personal viewpoint of confirmation in church. This poem is one the known and comes sealed in plastic to protect the print. It's in excellent condition as well beautifully written and typed.
The letter reads as follows:
When mothers weep and fathers richly proud
Worship on Sunday morning their tall son
and girls in white like angels in a play
Tiptoe between the potted palms
and all the crimson windows prey,
The preacher bound in black
Open his hands like pages of a book
And holds the black and crimson law
For every boy to look.
Last night between the chapters of a dream,
The photograph still sinning in the drawer,
The boy awoke; the moon shone in the yard
On hairy hollyhocks erect
And buds of roses pink and hard
And on the solid wall
A square of light like movies fell to pose
An actress naked in the night
As hollyhock and rose.
And to confirm his sex, breathless and white
With benediction self-bestowed he hnelt
Oh tightly married to his childish grip,
And unction smooth as holy-oil
Fell from the vessel's level lip,
Upon the altar-cloth;
Like Easter boys the blood sang in his head
And all night long the tallow beads
Like tears dried in the bed.
Come from the church, you parents and you girls,
And walk with kisses and with happy jokes
Beside this man. Be doubtly proud, you priest,
Once for his passion in the rose,
Once for his body self-released;
And speak aloud of her
Who in the perfect consciousness of joy
Stood naked in the electric light
And woke a hidden boy.
